“Tried to escape. I knocked him down.”
“ . . . He . . . beat shit . . . me,” the man said, his teeth chittering, one of his eyes blood-red, the other puffy and sealed closed with swelling. “ . . . Told me . . .” He coughed, wiping snot on the front of his shoulder. “ . . . Told me . . . run.”
“Aw, he’s a liar.”
Juan looked at Sam’s bruised and bloody knuckles. “I don’t think so.”
“So what if he’s not? He’s a bad guy.”
In his peripheral vision, Juan could see Zeke inching forward across the log. Juan could shoot him, but the man wasn’t going to get far in his condition. In fact—
The bullet struck Zeke in the back just below his shoulder blades, and he pitched forward into the river below.
Juan watched the man’s body submerge under the soupy water and then break the surface again. The man let out a chilling scream which was garbled as his head went back under the water.
When it next broke the surface, Zeke was a surprising distance away from his last position—the water was moving damned fast.
“ . . . Can’t move my legs . . . or arms!”
The head splashed back under the water. Juan never saw it again.
When Juan finally turned to face Sam, he was confused to see the pistol pointed right at his chest.
“Look,” Sam said. “Me and him had a talk before I let him run off into the woods.”
“What’s going on?”
“Isn’t it obvious?”
“You’re not really going to shoot me, are you? We’re best buds.”
“I don’t know you.”
Juan watched the tendons of Sam’s wrist tighten almost imperceptibly.
He was going to pull the trigger.
He was going to shoot him.
